Will Ferrell Is Armando Alvarez

Casa de mi Padre, “The Biggest International Motion Picture of All Time”.

When I think of films that are completely in Spanish and require English sub-titles, I do not automatically assume that they will include Will Ferrell (You might know him from Anchorman, Old School, Wedding Crashers and other similarly silly movies). However, this SNL funny guy seems to be taking his humor to a whole new level with the upcoming release of Casa de mi Padre set to hit theaters, March 16th in the U.S.

The story goes that things get loco when Ferrell who plays Armando Alvarez and brother Raul (Diego Luna) try to salvage their father’s ranch from financial ruin. Gael García Bernal‘s, drug lord character Onza is thrown into the mix, and Ferrell falls for his brother’s girl, Sonia played by Genesis Rodriguez completing the dramatic telenovela-esque scenario.

From the preview, it seems this film is pretty stylized, kind of reminding me of the work of the Coen Brothers. Like I mentioned earlier, its completely in Spanish, which I think is amazing. It is a given that all Will Ferrell fans will turn out to see this movie, exposing them to an hour plus of Spanish! A possible drawback though is that this has the potential to use humor that is based in the same stereotypes I just skewered ¡Rob! for. But with seasoned actors Luna and Bernal in the cast, I have hope that it will stray away from the stereotypes, and use some true humor and possibly produce a good story.

  1. This looks like it could be really funny. Judging from the trailer, it seems to be mocking Latino stereotypes that show up in the media (telanovela, mariachi bands, etc). I hope they can pull it off. Plus I love the Gael + Diego one-two punch!
